Lemongrass Kills Cancer Cells

Lemongrass is known in Malaysian local language as Serai (Cymbopogan Citratus) and it is widely used in Asian cuisine. Serai (lemongrass) which is available easily here is a common ingredient in curries, Nyonya cooking and local Malay dishes. Lemongrass is normally blended with other ingredients but in some recipes, they are smashed to bring out the aroma and oil in the stem. This grass liked plant grows very well in tropical and temperate countries. It thrives in sandy soil with lots of sunshine all year round. There are around 50 species of these grasses. The useful part is at the base stem at the bottom of the long leaves. This is where the aromatic oil is concentrated. When the base stem is planted in fertile soil, roots will start to form and very soon it will grow into a lemongrass bush.

Cymbopogan Citronella is used in the production of citronella oil which is a type of insect repellent. This versatile oil is one of the main ingredients in common insect repellent sprays. In fact, rubbing fresh pulverized lemongrass stalk on the body could help to repel insect. The tropical rain forest in Malaysia is full of insects, particularly the diseases carrying mosquitoes. Malaria is common in this part of the world; therefore it is advisable to use insect repellent before venturing into the jungle. The lemon liked aroma of the lemongrass plays an important part in aromatherapy treatment. It is also known to have antiseptic properties and is widely used in Ayurvedic treatment.

However, one of the most important discoveries that made serai (lemongrass) special is the chemical citral in it which can kill cancer cells. This wonderful chemical seems able to kill cancerous cells but leave normal cells in our body unharmed. Some Thai restaurants serve cool refreshing lemon grass drinks. The lemongrass is smashed, boiled in water and then chilled before sugar is added. Nutritionist has been advising cancer patients to drink this type of lemongrass water (minus the sugar). For normal people, drinking lemon grass infused drinks from time to time helps to terminate cancerous cells in the body. There are many recipes for lemongrass drinks available in the web. Find one that is suitable for your family taste buds.

So far, there is no known side effect of consuming lemongrass. Extensive research should be carried out on lemongrass to battle cancer. Maybe one day, citral extract can be used to effectively prevent and cure cancer.
